I never watched that particular series but this trope, like all the others, are what kills a series for me. If I see the same type of character in a series that we've seen in a hundred different series and can predict what's going to happen in an episode because we've seen the same story line play out at least a hundred times, I'm done. But when many TV execs are presented with something different, something new, they don't want to take a chance. They want the tropes.
